As the Hurricane known as Florence has dominated news over the past week, it caused me to reflect on what occurred when I traveled to North Carolina to work as a FEMA disaster inspector during the aftermath 14 years ago.

I was called again for Hurricane Katrina, but my experience as a disaster respondent for FEMA’s contractor, that I opted not to go. I hated the inefficiencies and the “it’s all about the money” attitude. It wasn’t to aid or assist. I can only hope that it has improved for efficiency and caring.
